AFRICAN ROMANCES
Soprano Makeda Hampton brings a rarely heard musical treasure into the present with AFRICAN ROMANCES, Op. 17, one of the earliest published art song cycles by a Black composer. Written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor in 1897 to the poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the cycle bridges European Romanticism with an African American literary voice. Hampton’s album is only the second known studio recording of the complete work in nearly 130 years.
